New China Visa Policies Updated in March 2026
In Shanghai, if a foreign employee:
- Is aged 60–65, and
- Already holds a valid Foreigner’s Work Permit
Then, when applying for a work authorization extension, they may typically receive:
A one-year transitional extension.
This practice effectively provides a buffer for both employers and employees, allowing time for talent succession planning or longer-term status planning.
However, it should be noted:
This is a transitional arrangement, and it does not mean the extension can be renewed indefinitely.
Accordingly, employers and foreign employees are advised to plan future status pathways in advance.
If a foreign national is currently working in another Chinese city and plans to transfer their work authorization to Guangzhou, the following operational risk deserves special attention:
Guangzhou generally does not grant an additional stay document merely because the applicant has insufficient time remaining in their current status.
That is to say:
When transferring to Guangzhou, the applicant must:
1️⃣ Complete the transfer within the validity period of the current visa/residence status, and
2️⃣ Successfully obtain a new Foreigner’s Work Permit
Only after that can the applicant proceed to apply for a new work-type residence permit.
If timing is mismanaged, the applicant may face:
- Inability to complete the status change in Guangzhou
- The need to exit China and reapply for a visa from abroad
Therefore, for companies planning job changes or cross-city assignments involving foreign employees, advance timeline planning is critical.

As a result, in practical adjudication across multiple regions, approval standards have noticeably tightened for new B-Category work authorization applications for applicants over 60.
In general:
It is now very difficult for individuals over 60 to obtain approval for a new B-Category work authorization.
If a continued work authorization is truly necessary, it usually requires consideration of:
Applying under A-Category (High-End Talent) criteria.
A-Category eligibility commonly requires meeting at least one of the following:
- High salary threshold
- Senior management position
- Background with a well-recognized enterprise
- Or qualification under applicable talent introduction policies
For employers, if a foreign employee is approaching 60, it is recommended to plan status strategy in advance, such as:
- Early planning for permanent residence
- Or assessing whether A-Category qualification criteria can be met
This helps reduce future renewal risk and avoids sudden work authorization barriers.

Under current requirements:
A foreign newborn must complete the following two items within two months after birth:
1️⃣ Obtain a passport
2️⃣ Complete China visa application procedures
If the deadline is missed, the system may generate:
A 303 record (overstay/non-processing record due to failure to apply on time)
which may affect future visa applications.
So what if timing is tight?
In many countries, passport issuance can take a long time. In that case, families may consider:
1️⃣ Applying for an Emergency Passport first
2️⃣ Using the Emergency Passport to complete the China visa application
3️⃣ After the long-term passport is issued, transferring the visa to the new passport
This approach can effectively reduce the risk of an overdue record.

During this period:
Canadian and UK citizens holding an ordinary passport may enter China visa-free if the purpose of travel is:
- Business activities
- Tourism
- Visiting relatives and friends
- Exchanges and visits
- Transit
And the length of stay does not exceed 30 days, they may enter China without a visa.
This means that for many business travelers:
What previously required advance visa processing can now be handled through direct entry for short-term business activities, significantly improving travel convenience.
However, it is important to note:
If the purpose of travel falls under any of the following, a visa is still required in advance:
- Employment in China
- Long-term study
- Long-term business assignment or posting
- Long-term residence
In other words, visa-free entry applies to short-term visits, but it does not apply to employment or long-duration stays.
