Foreigners Can No Longer Adopt Chinese Children? Except That…

On September 5th, Mao Ning, spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, held a regular press briefing. During the session, a journalist from the Netherlands raised a question: “According to the U.S. Department of State, China officially ended its international adoption program as of August 28, 2024. Can you confirm this information and provide more details?”

Mao Ning explained that the Chinese government has adjusted its transnational adoption policy. Going forward, China will no longer allow the adoption of children by foreign nationals, with exceptions made for foreigners seeking to adopt their stepchildren or children within three generations of collateral relatives. This decision aligns with the spirit of relevant international conventions.

“We appreciate the goodwill and compassion shown by foreign governments and families who wish to adopt children from China,” Mao Ning added.

“For further specifics, I recommend you consult with the competent Chinese authorities,” Mao Ning concluded.
